Long Island gardeners are invited to bring their home-grown tomatoes to the 13th Annual Hicks Nurseries Tomato Contest to be held on Saturday, September 11, at the nursery in Westbury.

Our custom designer, Suzanne Armata, has a way with planters. She’ll show you how to add seasonal autumn color to entryways, decks and patios with new or existing containers. You’ll be amazed at what you can create by following her tips.

After the drabness of winter our gardens cry out for brightness. Plant bulbs now and your spring garden will be alive with color. Vinnie Drzewucki, CNLP, shows how to plant spring flower bulbs such as tulips daffodils, crocus and more.

Composting In Your Backyard  -  3:00 PM
Small scale composting is easy to do and the finished product is a great soil amendment for landscape and garden use. Presented by Master Gardeners from the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County.

Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off  -  11:00 AM
The Giant Pumpkins will return for the 8th annual Pumpkin Weigh-Off at Hicks Nurseries. The judging will be held on Sunday, October 3, at 11 am. Winners in previous years have grown pumpkins weighing 876, 920 and 1030 pounds. Prizes will be awarded to the top three pumpkin growers. In addition to the pumpkin contest there will be numerous fall activities underway at the nursery, including hayrides, farm animals, roasted corn, kettle corn, the Otto the Ghost story and Otto in person.

Find Your Green Thumb: Houseplants for Beginners  -  1:00 PM
No home or office is complete without a few houseplants, but not all houseplants are created equal. Our tropical plant expert, Walter Dworkin, will focus on some of the easiest plants to grow and share advice for their care.

Chrysanthemums - the Queen of the Fall Flowers - will be on display at the 56th Annual Long Island Mum Show at Hicks Nurseries Saturday and Sunday, October 16 and 17.

With a blast of color and sizes, dahlias bring life and beauty to the landscape in late summer and into fall. Members of the Mid-Island Dahlia Society will have a wide variety of gorgeous dahlias on display in the Henry Hicks Learning Center. Members will be present to answer questions.
